I’ve had my eye on building a version of Garrett Hack’s huntboard for some time but never quite felt the amount of embellishments in the original were in line with my overall philosophy on furniture design. A combo card of empty space that needed a focal point as well as stumbling upon some particularly inspiring spalted maple at Groffs Lumber that seemed destined to be resawn into raised panels changed my mind and inspired me to take a “Hack” at it myself. The tabletop and casework for this piece are in some awesome figured rift/quartersawn Pennsylvania black cherry sourced from Hearne Hardwoods, with quartersawn eastern white pine making up the interior (chosen for its superior stability). Drawer boxes are in quartersawn hard maple, door beading and tenon pegs in Gabon ebony, and pulls turned from the same ebony with American holly inlay. All exterior surfaces were then hand scraped, burnished up to 0000 steel wool and finished a single coat of Osmo PolyX Satin.
