Custom Shaker-Inspired Desk

Sometimes a single piece of wood can set off a chain reaction and inspire an entire design! In this case, a piece of Ziricote from Hearne Hardwoods - that could just as easily be a landscape painting of the rolling Lancaster county farmland hillside - became the focal point of a Shaker style headmaster desk in local PA Cherry. The Allegheny mountains in northern Pennsylvania’s PA Wilds are known for producing the finest black cherry lumber in the world and for my money- I wouldn’t want to build Shaker furniture from anything else!

The two small drawers in the upper gallery are from a spectacular piece of really tight curly cherry from Dan @hudockshardwoods that I had been saving for over a year now. Drawer boxes in QS sycamore with QS EWP bottoms. Sometimes it pays to be a wood hoarder!

Process.

A 3D model was developed of the design along with dozens of iterations.

Laying out the front of the desk. Two blinds flank the middle Ziricote drawer.

Cutting half-blinds in the Ziricote. Not for the faint of heart.

Ziricote meeting Sycamore sides.

A series of elevational sketches were drawn to calibrate proportions for the top monitor.

Gluing up the carcass.

Final.
