Trestle Table in Walnut

Heavily influenced by the cherry original in the Harvard museum collection, this table departs primarily at the design of the trestle. In lieu of a turned stock leg, I wanted to show off a beautiful rift sawn hunk of Walnut. Ash dowels dot the breadboard ends on the table and make an added appearance at the extension breadboard ends.

The un-extended table is 6 feet from end to end. In Party Mode it extends to 8 feet in length to accommodate up to 10 people. This is accomplished through a custom-engineered end extension design. I fixed Ash wood boards to the underside of the extensions and developed a tie and lock to the underside of the main top.

This table was custom designed for an architect’s rowhome in Society Hill, Philadelphia.

Cutting tenons for breadboard ends which help prevent cupping in a piece this large.

Final sanding for the top and end extensions.

Drawn dowels allow movement between the breadboard ends and the tabletop.
